Answer

Q: How do you promote the work of your members?
A: Our primary means is with NYSR.com which is advertised by a variety of means. And, through publications (NYSR Portfolio of Architectural & Interior Rendering; see Portfolio link for more information about the Portfolio), through exhibitions, and through direct referrals from clients' inquiries. We also let developers, architects and others know about our web site through several means: posters, announcements/mailings, word of mouth, referrals from other illustrators who may be too busy to take on a job, etc....

Q: What kind of publications do you do? How often? What is the format?
A: We publish a book (NYSR Portfolio) around every 4 years and distribute them to developers, architects and others initially free of charge (5000 copies mailed in 2005). The soft cover book has become a favorite of many Architects (they always look forward to it), because it gives Architects a way of convincing their clients the need for a professional rendering and they can compare rendering styles.

Q: What kind of exhibits? who is invited?
A: When we have exhibitions, all members are invited and the public is informed through mailings and announcements. We have set up a new link to promote our capability to provide illustrations for exhibition, which you can see in our Member's Resource Area. Exhibitions happen about once every 6 years or so.

Q: What is the market today?
A: That depends on who you talk to, some illustrators are slow when others are busy and vice-a-versa. We have found that new illustrators can expect a slow first year while they are getting recognition and either make it in the second year or find other avenues to make a living.

Q: If I am on the level of the work presented on your website, does it guarantee work?
A: There are no guarantees in life...going out on your own is a risk and at the same time exciting, you'll be standing on your own two feet, you'll be your own boss, etc., and the NYSR is one way to help you succeed by providing business advice, marketing strategities, contracts guidelines, collections techniques, computer advice and illustration techniques as well as getting your name in the public realm.

Q: What are the average prices for the rendering?
A: Average price depends on your skill level/time involved/technique/personal and business expenses but in our profession the range can be anything from $ 800 for a sketch to $8000 and up for a single rendering. Based on this range, an average price per rendering would be about $4000. We would hope that all members are charging a professional rate, but, by law, we cannot recommend a rate structure so as to avoid anti-competitive practices.

Q: If I chose to participate, do I have to mail you my work, or what do I need to do, for you to publish my work?
A: You will e-mail 3 images you want posted on the NYSR website, and some additional information, or you can send a CD (have your images scanned at a photo service company (see links in Member's Resource Area). When we publish our NYSR Portfolio, each member will be informed and have an opportunity to send the images they want included.

Q: Do you think the cost of dues is worth it?
A: The NYSR membership dues have paid for itself, time and time again, which is reflected in the number of returning members each year. I suggest that if you are serious about becoming a professional Architectural illustrator, then you should join the NYSR for a couple of years. It is the smartest thing you can do because of the exposure and credibility you will gain over time.

Q: How do I become a member?
A: For your convenience we have an application in PDF format. Download the file, print it out, fill in the information and send it along with your check for your dues.
