PROGRAMS
EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM: Through its exhibitions program, NYSR brings the achievements of its members to the public. Through the exhibition program, the public can compare the subtlies or the vibrancy of a given medium and see how many illustrators are now blending the mediums into new hybrid styles. No where can one see such a sprectum of the highest quality of work and easily comprehended them than in these public forums.
GET-TOGETHERS PROGRAM: About twice a year, NYSR brings its members together in a variety of informal settings to encourage friendships, exchange of ideas, and relief from the hectic pace of the illustration business. Last year, events included a summer barbacue and a 'Taste of Chinatown' holiday diner.
NEWSLETTER PROGRAM: NYSR publishes a bi-yearly newsletter for its members which discusses the goals, concerns, accomplishments and other information relevant to the architectural illustration professional.
NOTED ILLUSTRATOR PROGRAM: Started in November 2002, this program features existing members in the NYSR Newletter and on the NYSR.com website to give the public some insight into individual members work style, methods, academic experience, business sitiuation and other relevant information.
PORTFOLIO ARCHIVE PROGRAM: In 2004, NYSR has taken steps to secure and archive 20 past issues of the NYSR Portfolio of Architectural & Interior Renderings (1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and the current 2004-2005 issue) for future reference, potential use by NYSR and to prevent their continued distribution. By taking this important step, NYSR has secured the heritage of the Society for the future.
PORTFOLIO DONATION PROGRAM: The New York Society of Renderers, Inc. has begun efforts in donating past issues of the NYSR Portfolio of Interior & Architectural Rendering to colleges and universities in the United States in order to reinforce the standard of quality of the Architectural Illustration profession.
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM: Membership is open to all practicing professional renderers. We seek to promote the work of our members through publications, the Internet, exhibitions, referrals, announcements, articles and direct advertising. The Society acts as a forum to establish professional standards and discuss business issues affecting renderers today. Improvements in Membership include our Dues Notice and collection schedule, Member's Checklist, an expanded NYSR.com website and Members Area, Outreach Programs and other activities which promote our Society and individual Members.
PUBLIC OUTREACH PROGRAM: Through its Frequently Ask Questions list (FAQ's) posted on its website, NYSR has taken an important step in helping potential clients in the process of hiring a professional illustrator. The use of this section has guarenteed that officers do not influence the selection process and that individual members have equal chance of being solicited for work.
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM: NYSR has initiated this program to promote the profession of Architectural Illustration in the High School, College & University setting. Our goal is to initiate an awareness of the professional standards required for Architectural Illustrators including: Contracts, Credit, Copyright, Business Practices, Licensing, Techniques, Marketing, Fees, Sales Tax and Use of Vendors. It is not meant to be a way of promotion for the purposes of getting client work. There is no better way to understand the rhythm of the Architectural Illustration profession in preparation of individual entrepreneurship.
SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM: The sponsorship program was initiated in order to raise funds for the NYSR Portfolio of Interior & Architectural Rendering to make it possible for all its members to participate equally, and to thus, provide a more complete representation of illustrators available to the public for consideration. In return, NYSR would acknowlede its sponsors in all its publications and website.
WEBSITE PROGRAM: NYSR.com is divided into 3 parts: first, the listing of individual members with examples of their work; second, an open information area for the public and illustrators; and third, the Members Area. It is here that NYSR expresses its open and equal attitude for all members allowing them to use the website as a source for common information and help. It is also a place where the public can quickly search and easily contact an illustrator.
INITIATIVES
INCORPORATION INITIATIVE: In 2002 the New York Society of Renderers, Inc. applied to the State of New York Department of State, Division of Corporations and was accepted as a legal Not-For-Profit organization.
MEMBER HELP INITIATIVE: In 2002, NYSR initated a program called "How To" which helps its members with the basics of different subjects including: 'Computer Basics,'
SALES TAX INITIATIVE: On November 14, 1997, The New York Society of Renderers, Inc. contacted the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance with a Petition for Advisory Opinion regarding Sales Tax, which it received, document TSB-A-98 (43) S. A copy of the official Advisory Opinion is posted at www.nysr.com for reference to both the public and architectural illustrators doing work in the State of New York. In summary, all architectural illustrations, creating tangible property sold to clients in NYS, are subject to NYS Sales Tax unless there is an exemption by definition, no matter what state they do business from. NYSR secured relief from prospective tax assessments for all NYSR members for previous tax years.
DRIVES & CAMPAIGNS
MARKETING CAMPAIGN: NYSR promotes its members equally through the NYSR Portfolio, the NYSR Website, Exhibitions, AIA-NY Oculus Advertising, direct mailings to Architects, Developers, Interior Designers, Architectural Colleges and Universities and other means.
MEMBER CREDIT AWARENESS DRIVE: NYSR has taken steps to remind its members the importance of receiving credit whenever their illustrations are published and has helped them inform their clients of this issue. We have posted suggestions for contractural changes, reinforced the notion of value in receiving credit and, printed up 'Post-It' pads with a generic 'credit message' members will be able to post-it on artwork, prints or photographs leaving their offices. These efforts will help reinforce the Credit Awareness message and enhance public awareness for the benefit of all illustrators.
NEW MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENT CAMPAIGN: Since 2003, The New York Society of Renderers, Inc. has extended the welcome mat to new members with announcements to both the public and its members of the addition of new members into our fold acommplished through the NYSR Newsletter, the NYSR website and through e-mail. Our goal is two-fold, to make sure new members become aquainted with NYSR quickly, making the organization useful to them, and to allow existing members to get to know the new members who may become a valuable source for extra help when in a pinch.
PUBLISHERS OUTREACH CAMPAIGN: The New York Society of Renderers, Inc. has initated an awareness drive directed to publishers reminding them the need for a credit line adjacent to any architectural illustration they publish. It is acknowledged that architectural illustrators inherently own the copyright to their work and therefore it can not be reproduced with their permission. It is also acknowledged that there is an inherent value to having a credit line published adjacent to an image which has been created to represent a potential project.
